If you already read your mail in Apple Mail on a recent iPhone, you have a free priority sort: tap Show Priority and time-sensitive messages move to the top. That is a real help for one inbox on one phone. It stops at the edge of the Mail app, it is a lift rather than a ranking, and it needs a recent iPhone in a supported language. Nolario is our product, so weigh this comparison accordingly: below we say exactly what Apple's feature does, where it is the better choice, and where a ranked feed across mail, Slack and Teams earns its price.
At a glance
Apple Mail lifts urgent email to the top of one inbox; Nolario scores every item from every channel and orders the whole list. The Apple column uses only what Apple's own iPhone User Guide said when we read it on October 23, 2026; where the guide is silent, the cell says so.

What Apple's Priority Messages actually do
Priority Messages put time-sensitive email at the top of your inbox, and categories split the rest into four piles. When we checked Apple's iPhone User Guide for iOS 27 on October 23, 2026, the page "Filter emails in Mail on iPhone" gave the steps: open Mail, tap your inbox, open the inbox menu, then tap Show Priority. Time-sensitive messages then appear at the top of your inbox, in the Primary category or in List View.
The companion page "Automatically categorize incoming emails in Mail on iPhone" names four categories: Primary for personal messages and time-sensitive information, Transactions for confirmations, receipts and shipping notices, Updates for news, newsletters and social updates, and Promotions for coupons and sales mail. A message in one of the last three that carries time-sensitive information also shows up in Primary. Apple adds that categories are not available in all countries or regions.
The same guide states the limits plainly. Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 runs on an Apple Intelligence enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or an iPhone 16 model or later, it is not available in all languages or regions, and usage limits may apply. The supported device languages it lists include English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.
Where the free priority sort stops
It stops in four places: other channels, the order inside the priority pile, older devices, and corrections below the sender level. None of this makes it a bad feature; it makes it a feature of one app.
- Only email, only in Mail. A client's Slack message or a Teams chat from your co-founder is not in the list, so the most urgent thing of your morning can sit outside the sort entirely.
- A lift, not a ranking. Apple describes time-sensitive messages moving to the top. The guide does not describe an order among them or show why a message was lifted, so with eight urgent mails you still decide which comes first.
- Recent iPhones only. Without an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 16 or later in a supported language, you do not get it at all.
- Corrections by sender. Categorize Sender moves all current and future messages from a sender. That is the right tool for a newsletter, and a blunt one for a client who writes both invoices and emergencies.

How Nolario ranks instead
Nolario gives every item from every connected channel a score from 0 to 100 and orders the whole feed by it, with the reason for each rank. It pulls Gmail, Outlook, any IMAP mailbox, Slack, Microsoft Teams and Google Calendar into that one feed, so a short Slack message from a client can sit above a long newsletter that arrived earlier. The reply is drafted in your voice from what you have sent before, and Nolario never sends it: we decided early that one wrong auto-sent reply to an investor costs more than every minute a tool saves.
One detail from our own scorer shows the difference between a lift and a ranking. A message our scam check rates as a likely scam is capped in the lowest band of the scale, even when it claims to come from someone on your VIP list, because an attacker writing as a VIP is exactly the case to guard against. It keeps its warning, so nothing is hidden; it just never becomes the first thing you are told to deal with. A message that is only suspicious keeps its rank and gets a softer hint. Before any mail text reaches an AI provider, Nolario filters it: names become roles, secrets are removed and exact numbers are blurred.
The honest limits: Nolario is on a waitlist, it is a desktop web app with no mobile app yet, and Teams chats need a Microsoft work or school account. It does not send, and it does not sort mail into Apple's categories.
Can you use both?
Yes, and many people will. Nolario connects to your mailboxes directly, through Gmail, Outlook or IMAP, so nothing changes in Apple Mail on your phone. iCloud Mail reaches Nolario over IMAP; the setup is in our guide to a unified inbox for iCloud, Gmail and IMAP accounts. If you also use Gmail's own AI sorting, the same comparison for Google is in Nolario vs the Gmail AI Inbox.
Verdict
Keep Apple's Priority Messages if your work arrives as email, you read it on a recent iPhone, and you want something free today. Choose Nolario if the message that matters often comes through Slack or Teams, if you want one ordered list with a reason for each place, and if you work at a desk. For the wider field, our best AI email assistants for founders compares the assistants you can install now. The channels Nolario connects are on integrations, plans are on pricing, and the free tools need no account.
