Microsoft Teams message reminders let you turn a chat or channel message into a private reminder with a due notification. Microsoft's message center says the rollout starts in early November 2026, so until it reaches your tenant the follow-up tools are Save this message and Mark as unread. This guide shows the steps for both, what the new reminders do, and which one fits which kind of message.
What are Microsoft Teams message reminders?
Teams message reminders turn a chat or channel message into an item you are reminded about later. Microsoft message center post MC1470887, which we opened on October 28, 2026, says you can create, update, complete and delete reminders, that they show in a Reminders view with upcoming, active and completed items, and that Teams sends a toast notification and a badge count on the chat icon when one is due. Each reminder keeps the message context for follow-up.
The post says the reminders are private to each user, need no admin configuration and are on by default. It lists Android, desktop, iOS, Mac and web as platforms. The targeted release starts in early November 2026 and the general availability wave runs from mid-November into December 2026; the September 29 update moved both back from October.
How do you follow up on a Teams message today?
Until reminders reach your tenant, save the message or mark its chat as unread. Both are on Microsoft's support pages, which we opened on October 28, 2026, and neither page describes a due time or a notification.
- Hover over the message and select More options, then Save this message.
- Open the Saved section at the top of your list of chats and channels, and filter it by chats or channels.
- To unsave, hover over the item in Saved and select More options, then Unsave this message.
- For a whole chat on desktop, point to the chat, select More options, then Mark as unread.
- To keep a chat close, drag it into Favorites, or select More options, then Move to, then Favorites.
Microsoft's Saved page says edits by the author show in the saved copy, and that a message the author deleted stays in Saved with the note "Message has been deleted by author." Its page on unread chats gives the Mark as unread and Favorites steps for desktop only; the mobile steps it lists are Mute, Move to and Hide.
Save, mark unread or remind: which fits which message?
Use Save for a message you want to find again, Mark as unread for a chat you must reopen soon, and a reminder for something with a time attached. The table below uses only what the three Microsoft pages state.
| Feature | Save this message | Mark chat as unread | Message reminder |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you mark | One message or post | A whole chat | One chat or channel message |
| Where it shows | Saved section at the top of the list | The chat appears unread when you reopen it | Reminders view: upcoming, active, completed |
| Notifies you when due | Not described | Not described | Yes, toast notification and badge count |
| Availability | Now, steps on Microsoft Support | Now, steps on desktop | Rollout from early November 2026 |
How do Teams reminders compare with Slack to-dos and email tasks?
Teams and Slack now both keep a personal follow-up list inside the chat app. Slack's help article names no sync with other task apps, and Microsoft's post describes no sync for Teams reminders either. Slack's version is the To-dos tab that replaced Later, covered in Slack's To-dos tab and where email tasks go. For mail, Gmail and Outlook have their own task features, compared in turning emails into tasks in Gmail and Outlook. The result is separate follow-up lists in Teams, Slack and your mail, so deciding what needs you first matters more than where you park it.
Where does Nolario fit next to Teams reminders?
Nolario pulls Teams chats into the same feed as Gmail, Outlook and Slack and scores each item from 0 to 100, so a Teams message that needs an answer is ranked next to the email that does. It does not create reminders in Teams, and Teams chats work for work and school Microsoft accounts only. Nolario never sends a message for you; it drafts replies in your voice for you to send. It is a desktop web app with no mobile app yet. Nolario is in early access. Access is by waitlist, joining the waitlist is free, and the product opens to waitlist members between May and August 2027.
